I came to make perfume from the side door, so to speak. As an artist who has worked with a wide range of media, when I started dabbling with botanical aromatics I found them utterly captivating, with enormous potential as a medium for expression. Suddenly I was “there,” transported to forests, to riversides, to hazy childhood memories, to places I had never been but could now envision. Scent is the ray of light that illuminates deep memory. It is affecting, evocative, and visceral. There is an unfiltered, immediate quality to the experience. This is, for me, its most fertile aspect as an artistic medium.
Though I am, technically, a perfumer (albeit a self-taught one), I consider myself more as an artist who works with scent. Deep Field is a way for me to share my work, with a focus on experiential, immersive perfumes that conjure the kaleidoscopic textures of the natural world. Many of my perfumes are all-natural in composition, which is quite rare in the perfume world. Botanical extracts are considerably more expensive than their synthetic counterparts, making these perfumes more costly to produce than typical commercial fragrances.
However, it is important to me that my perfumes be broadly available to those who would enjoy them, not just those who can afford luxury pricing. Therefore I offer these perfumes at as best a cost as I can manage. I offer a range of sizes, and my perfumes ship without packaging (save the leak-proof foil bags they are sealed in). As a micro-scale independent producer, high quality packaging would substantially increase my costs, and then largely end up as waste anyway.
The reality is that much of the fragrance industry's spending goes toward marketing rather than the perfumes themselves. I would rather invest everything in my materials, as that is where the experience is.
All of my perfumes are vegan unless otherwise noted. I take great care to formulate my perfumes safely. However, certain materials, botanical and otherwise, are known to cause reactions for a percentage of the population. I recommend doing a patch test before applying the perfume to the rest of the body. Simply apply the perfume to the underside of a forearm and monitor for 24 hours. This will help determine whether you are sensitive to any of the materials in the perfume.
